Mountain Sweet Berry Farm

Many people don’t believe me when I say that I have lived and worked on a produce farm in Upstate New York. But I have and it was a glorious six months of learning, getting my hands dirty and spending quality time with one of my favorites. It all stated in the summer of 2013, when my dear friend Kellie asked me to work at their farm stand on Saturday’s at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City. One day a week turned into two days a week and in July of 2014, during my transition out of the city, I moved onto the farm. It was experiential learning at its best and within a field I didn’t even know I was passionate about. I will forever be grateful for the knowledge I gained during this time; about the field of agriculture, the struggles and successes of local farmers and a deeper understanding of where my food comes from. Stepping away from the field of education entirely for a short time provided me with time and space to reflect on what I wanted my purpose as an educator to be. And there is no better place to come to these realizations then in the middle of a strawberry field.
